The Editor is a member of the Policy, Advocacy, and Communications (PAC) team and handles production of reports and other documents from the raw copy stage through the binding and distribution process, and performs editing of shorter Health Programs Group (HPG) publications. He or she assists technical staff in the preparation of quality documents by providing editorial assessments and performing substantive editing, such as reorganization, rewrites of passages, and accommodating non-native english writers. The Editor is responsible for providing communications editing support to the major tuberculous and other infectious diseases programs as well as for work related to other MSH and HPG projects. He or she adjusts quickly to shifting priorities and last-minute requests to meet team goals. The Editor is responsible for tracking various projects such as quarterly reports and helping the communications team stay on deadline.

Specific Responsibilities

Editing (100%)

  • Perform substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading of assigned documents, including manuals, assessment reports, presentations, quarterly and annual reports, proposals, newsletters, and outreach communications materials without requiring oversight by the Senior Communications Manager. All editing work to meet USAID and HPG requirements.
  • Edit and if necessary rewrite flyers, technical briefs, Web materials, journal abstracts, conference-related posters and other printed matter, visual aids, and promotional materials.
  • Manage freelance editors, proofreaders, and graphic artists and oversee administrative tasks by PAC support staff.
  • Draft statements of work and prepare outside service agreements.
  • Take responsibility for reviewing work of freelancers and responding to their queries, and approve invoices as appropriate.
  • Review and comment on draft designs for covers, posters, slides, etc. Also coordinate with translators on translation projects.
  • Provide full backstopping for the Senior Communications Manager's management and technical responsibilities, including activity management and editorial services.
  • Work with authors to resolve queries, obtain necessary approvals, and negotiate any disputed style points. Must be flexible in working with authors internationally.
  • Take full responsibility for assigned technical documents. Work with authors on document preparation and schedules, stay within budgetary guidelines, and meet all deadlines from the raw copy stage through the binding and distribution process.
  • Maintain style sheets; revise acronym list, style bibliographies, or reference lists as necessary.
  • Review queries and edits with the author and ensure that any changes made in a portion of the manuscript are reflected throughout the entire document.
  • Participate in all stages of the document production process, including basic-to-moderate formatting, printing, online dissemination, and repurposing for various uses (newsletters, blog, etc.).
  • Work with graphic artists, project staff, and PAC team to bring documents through all iterations of corrections to final copy and dissemination.
  • Meet regularly with the PAC team, and meet with authors/and technical staff as needed.
  • Become familiar with the MSH and HPG Style Guides, and participate in developing, revising, and implementing quality control mechanisms and guidelines.
  • Maintain integrity of electronic files and hard copies of administrative and manuscript files.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree with appropriate training in editing and production. Master's degree preferred.

  • 3 years editing experience.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Solid experience in the editing profession, preferably within an international health-related field.
  • Familiarity with document layout, author rights and permissions, research, and fact checking.
  • Experience with USAID projects helpful.
  • Experience in manuscript assessment to determine a document's editorial requirements and ability to write scopes of work for freelancers.
  • Ability to accurately proofread and review documents for layout and formatting consistency required.
  • Proficiency in file management and editorial production.
  • Strong Word program skills, including working in track changes and developing table of contents, pagination, and tables. Also intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Excel and PowerPoint. Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat helpful.
  • Experience in InDesign and data visualization helpful.
  • Proficiency in Google docs and file sharing.
  • Thorough familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style preferred.
  • English fluency required, including speaking, writing, understanding, and reading; proficiency in French and/or Spanish desirable.
