Overview

MSH is a nonprofit international health organization with nearly 2,500 people from over 74 nationalities working in over 40 countries. Our mission: Saving lives and improving the health of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people by closing the gap between knowledge and action in public health. Together with our partners, we are helping managers and leaders in developing countries to create stronger management systems that improve health services for the greatest health impact.

As part of this work, MSH is engaged in helping to ensure women and children who have suffered sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) have access to comprehensive and supportive care. Limited data are available on the many reasons why women do not seek care after experiencing gender-based violence, especially in low income countries such as Mali. While we know of some of the barriers that keep women from seeking or getting the services they require, we don't know all or how to quantify the impact of each. Health services are often designed based on the characteristics of those already in the position to seek help, i.e. the demands of the population that actively participates in reporting shapes resource allocation, policy, and funding. The needs of those women whose experiences go unreported, and whose feedback may have direct implications and modifications for program design, may be overlooked.

MSH is working on a participatory research project with local partners in Mali, in order to generate and share data that address the reasons for these unreported cases, and develop advocacy tools and a campaign based on research findings.
