Management Sciences for Health’s (MSH’s) Pharmaceuticals & Health Technologies Group (PHT) works to improve health worldwide by enhancing access to and improving use of essential medicines and other health technologies. PHT’s focus is to help countries develop the capacity to ensure access to pharmaceuticals and health technologies through system strengthening approaches.
PHT is looking for a managing editor to oversee all aspects of editorial support, including written external communications for PHT. The Managing Editor will set standards and ensure production and publication of quality written materials that meet the requirements of MSH and funder needs. The Managing Editor will interact with all levels of organization’s staff to support their work requirements.
Specific Responsibilities
Editor (50%)
- Works with editorial staff to edit and review documents. Will work closely with other editors to ensure that documents are consistent and clean. Should have experience in editing all forms of documents, including books. Should have publishing experience.
- Must know Chicago style guide, National Library of Medicine referencing; have solid grammar skills and ability to clarify jargon.
- Experience with technical documents (statistics, tables, figures) required.
Manage editorial work (20%)
- Monitors work flow, types of work, and requests for special projects. The editorial department currently receives about 250 editorial requests a year, including reports, abstracts for conferences, PowerPoints, flyers, brochures, books, and training courses. Ensures that each request is answered, work is handled as promptly as possible, and the final product meets high editorial and layout standards, including proper funder program branding.
- Works with team to ensure that tracking systems for various jobs are kept up to date and accurate, and that final projects meet the standards of PHT and the requestor.
- Serves as final arbitrator on questions and issues dealing with documents, editorial procedures, and work prioritization.
Supervise editorial staff (15%)
- Supervise editorial staff, assign work, and support staff in various tasks needed to keep department running smoothly.
- Work with editorial team and staff to triage editorial requests as they come in and make quick decisions on setting importance and ranking job.
- Coordinate with staff on various editorial projects and when needed, act as liaison between PHT staff at headquarters and country-level staff.
- Supervise (or work with) graphics design staff to ensure that all materials produced meet PHT and MSH standards.
Support communications activities (10%)
- Collaborate with Director, Communications and Publications to plan upcoming communications requests such as support for international conferences, major training programs, and branding, design, and developing materials for various program initiatives.
- Participate in PHT editorial and communications discussions with country and technical staff. Develop relationships with country groups that allows for clear communications between the department and worldwide
- Work directly with many technical staff to ensure that their editing expectations are met and also that their work conforms to the official PHT guidelines set by the editorial department.
Represents PHT editorial and/or communications team within MSH (5%)
- Meets with other departments if editorial services are required.
- Represents PHT editorial and communications in companywide discussions.
Qualifications and Experience
- BA in journalism, English, or related fields.
- 7 years of editorial experience in a health-related field,
- Must have past management experience.
Preferred:
- 15 or more years of experience with NGO
Knowledge and Skills
- Must have excellent knowledge of and skills in editing a wide variety of documents, including technical public health pieces.
- Must have experience working with MS Word and Google documents, including formatting.
- Must have experience with publishing for wide variety of audiences—governments, donors, researchers, technical pharmaceutical staff, etc.
- Must understand copyright and open access laws.
Competencies
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks both in individual work and team’s work, often with tight deadlines.
- Must have ability to work with international teams and PHT senior staff to understand what their needs are and translate those needs into high quality documents and other materials.
- Essential to understand requirements of funders and ensure that PHT materials meet those communication and education needs.
Physical Demands
- Keyboard use, Pulling drawers, Lifting papers <10lbs., ETC..
- Little or no travel.
