Organization: Management Sciences for Health
Country: United States of America
Closing date: 14 Apr 2017

Overview

MSH is a nonprofit international health organization with nearly 2,500 people from over 74 nationalities working in over 40 countries. Our mission: Saving lives and improving the health of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people by closing the gap between knowledge and action in public health. Together with our partners, we are helping managers and leaders in developing countries to create stronger management systems that improve health services for the greatest health impact.

While high percentages of women across low-income countries attend at least one antenatal care (ANC) visit, many do not attend the recommended number of visits during their pregnancy. To better respond to women’s needs and expectations and improve coverage of ANC, there is growing recognition that alternative models of care are needed. Group models that promote self-care and social support, first developed in the US, are emerging as a promising alternative, if adapted to women’s needs and the local context. MSH is testing this model in several countries to identify how it may be adapted for low-income settings.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Contribute to analysis of data and writing a technical brief and articles on results from pilot study in Uganda
  • Provide inputs to development of proposals aimed at building the group ANC portfolio
  • Assist with preparations for group ANC testing in other countries as relevant
  • Maintain updated literature review on ANC

  • Interest in and some knowledge of maternal and newborn health issues in low-income settings
  • Excellent analytic and writing skills
  • Quantitative or qualitative data analysis skills and relevant software

What are the student takeaways:

  • To better understand the challenges with quality and coverage of maternal health services in low and middle-income settings
  • To build experience with analyzing and documenting project experience, as well as developing new proposals based on these findings

Please note:

  • This is an unpaid internship and candidates are responsible for their own housing and transportation.
