Overview

The Accountant is responsible for reviewing, uploading and posting field office finance data, and for the reconciliation of appropriate country office accounts. S/He is also responsible for training and monitoring performance of country offices’ accountants to prepare month end and year end information in compliance with MSH processes. S/He also plays a key role in creating templates, tools, training to be used by Country Office Accountants. The Accountant will also be called upon to provide assistance to the General Ledger Manager in relationship with US headquarter transactions, reconciliations, the month and year end closes, audits as well as accounting system maintenance.

Specific Responsibilities

Support timely and accurate general ledger close cycle (55%)

  • Prepare and review account reconciliations, including Country Office accounts; post adjusting journal entries, post consolidating entries, as required.
  • Support the General Ledger Manager in reviewing diverse financial transactions.
  • Assist with analysis of monthly financial statements and report on variances.
  • Track Balance Sheet reconciliations to be performed and manage the related workflow.
  • Receive monthly country office financial reports. Ensure that required files, documents, and records have been submitted accurately and timely.
  • Prepare and post the upload of country office accounting data into the Corporate Accounting System.
  • Report errors, problems, or suggestions for process improvements.

Training and developing field office accounting team (25%)

  • Prepare monthly and yearly communication to the accountants in country.
  • Receive monthly attestations from country accountants and analyze data to ensure compliance with accounting policies.
  • Provide training and necessary support to fulfill MSH accounting submission requirements.
  • Support the system upgrade to QuickBooks Online.
  • Work effectively with local accountant to identify issues and solutions.

Risk management and compliance (15%)

  • Document accounting positions, policies, and procedures;
  • Implement monitoring of country office financial data, including but not limited to the allocation of shared costs, the accruals for termination/ leave benefits, in order to evaluate and manage risk in country offices.
  • Support Corporate audit process.
  • Participate in donor audits and internal audits, as required.

Other duties (5%)

  • Assist the General Ledger Manager with special projects, as needed. The Accountant II will have the opportunity to be exposed to significant level of ad-hoc analysis and projects if core duties above are delivered timely, accurately and professionally.

Qualifications and Experience

Education

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience

Preferred

  • CPA

Experience

Required

  • 3 years of relavent experience

Preferred

  • 3-5 years of relavent experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of Navigator or similar ERP preferred; experience with QuickBooks/QuickBooks Online required.
  • Experience with federal cost reimbursement practices, such as the Federal Acquisitions Regulations (FAR) and USAID regulations desirable.

Competencies

  • Ability to work closely with the Country Finance accountants and other accounting and finance team members to ensure an accurate and timely close.
  • Account reconciliation skills with demonstrated ability to independently analyze account transactions, as well as review and post adjusting journal entries.
  • Knowledge of A-133 audits.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting and fund accounting; experience with foreign currency accounting and multinational accounting; prior work experience with non-USG, foundations, and other donors a plus.
  • Ability to proactively review existing accounting processes and recommend and implement improvements to accounting workflows and internal controls.
  • Ability to work with General ledger Manager to document accounting positions, policies, and procedures.
  • Comfortable assuming key roles in accounting system upgrades, including completion and documentation of testing.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with positive attitude, remain focused on results, and respond to changing priorities
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to operate in a culturally diverse organization

Physical Demands

  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Keyboard use, Pulling drawers, Lifting papers <10lbs, etc.
